See this for a New York Times report on the new algorithm for determining if a number is prime. See this for the algorithm. See this for a site with lots of information about it. Note that even though the new algorithm is faster than the sieve method and it guarantees the number is prime, the Miller-Rabin test is still much faster and the error probability can be made as small as desired.
