Overview of computer systems organization. Data representation. Machine and assembly language programming.

High level programming language constructs

Function call/return

Parameters of a function(method)

Course Outcomes:

Master the representations of numeric and character data

Master the implementation of some basic combinational circuits, registers and memories

Be familiar with the data path of a simple von Neumann architecture and its relation to the instruction execution cycle

Master simple machine and assembly language programming

Master the implementation of high-level language constructs in lower levels: selection, iteration, function call/return

Be familiar with interrupts and traps

Grading:

10% participation activities (ZyBook)

25% projects

25% midterm exam (May 25th)

25% final exam (June 15th)

For each assignmnet, you must upload the soft copy of the assignment through Moodle before the deadline and submit a printed copy of the assignment along with the signed originality declaration, in class on the due date.

I will grant incompletes only in extreme circumstances, such as medical emergencies with proper documentation.

I expect you to attend class regularly and promptly, and to participate in discussions. Feel free to ask questions -- if something is unclear to you, it is probably unclear to others as well.
